Margaret Elizabeth Tompkins Belt of Charlotte passed into eternity November 25th. She was 86 years old. Margaret was born October 5, 1930, the oldest of five children born to Charles Melvin and Bessie Laurie Nicholson Tompkins of Mile Creek, SC. When she was 8, her father died tragically and the family was forced to leave their home. She acted as mother to her siblings, while their mother worked at the Easley Mill. At Easley High School she met the love of her life, Luke. A year older than her, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after graduation. Faced with his possible deployment to Korea, they clandestinely married while she was still in high school. At the last moment Luke's assignment was changed. Instead of going to war, Luke became a Drill Instructor in California. After she graduated Margaret boarded the Sunset Limited train to California and crossed the US alone to meet her dashing young Marine to begin their life together.
As he served his country for the next 20 years she served as well, raising their three children while moving 19 times during his career. Even with this almost constant change she nurtured a loving and orderly home. After moving across the US four times, and spending a year in Morocco, they settled in Charlotte after his retirement from the service. In her spare time Margaret loved to sew and paint. She was a sewing instructor at CPCC for several years, and their home was adorned with her many beautiful landscapes and still lifes. Her beloved Luke preceded her in death in 2010. Her quiet strength and gentle resolve will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She leaves behind daughter Shirley Dianne Belt (William Stice) of Cary, NC, daughter Carol Lynn Knight (Balfour) of Balsam, NC, son Martin Lesley Belt and fiancée Karen McCall of Harrisburg, NC, granddaughter Karen Michelle Hovis (Alan) and great grandsons Corey and Gabriel Hovis of Huntersville, NC.
Her siblings, Martha "Eloise" Tompkins Burns and John T. M. Tompkins preceded her in death, but she is survived by her brothers James Tompkins and Clarence "Shorty" Tompkins (Earlene) of Easley, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom has a special place in their heart for their beloved Aunt Margaret.
The funeral service will be held 2:30p.m., Friday, December 2 in the chapel at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
